European Shark Week

Predator Turned Prey - Turning the Tide for Sharks

European Shark Week takes place every year, providing the opportunity for people across Europe to unite and raise awareness about shark conservation.

Preparations are already well on the way for European Shark Week 2010, which will take place on the 9-17 October 2010.  Remember it's never too early to start planning an event! Whether you're an aquarium, organisation or an individual wanting to make a difference, please let us know if you would like to get involved.

European Shark Week 2009!

The biggest ever splash recorded sent ripples across Europe from the 10-18 October, as people all over united in celebration of European Shark Week 2009!

An exciting array of events and activities ensured an action packed week and demonstrated a deep commitment by all those involved in helping to spread the word about shark conservation. In the UK; enthusiastic eggcase hunters searched the shores of Sussex; A group of artists plunged into the mysterious depths of our oceans to give us ‘Metamarine’, an art exhibition held in Bristol; A giant shark drawing materialised in Hull and participants in Scotland were thrilled as they came face to face with baby sharks and rays.  There were shark quizzes, talks and trails, feeding demonstrations, shark art and competitions, as well as the opportunity to sign this year’s European Shark Week petition to call on Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero to help improve European shark finning legislation.

Shark Trust support stretched way beyond the UK with Camel Divers in Egypt running activities including a shark fact pub quiz.  Over on Kuredu Island in the Maldives Prodivers staff and guests launched Shark and Ray week with island wide activities, speciality shark dives and training courses.

Tens of thousands of supporters across Europe have signed the Shark Alliance petition, with over 8800 signatures on the Shark Trust website alone and we’re rapidly counting more!

The Shark Trust  would like to say a massive thank you to all those aquariums, dive clubs, conservation organisations and individuals who have contributed and made a difference this year.
