Sharks in Focus 2013 - Winners Announced

05 Oct 2013

Whitetip Reef Sharks © Terry Goss - Winner of Sharks in Focus 2013.WORLDWIDE// The Shark Trust is delighted to announce the winners of Sharks in Focus 2013 – the photography competition that aims to change attitudes about sharks through imagery. Our apologies for the slightly late announcement - the standard of images has been so high this year that judging has taken a little longer than expected.

But without further ado we would like to congratulate our Sharks in Focus 2013 winner Terry Goss, for his spectacular image of Whitetip Reef Sharks, which was submitted to the Shark Personality category. Well done Terry - we hope you enjoy your prize package of shark activities.

Congratulations also to our category winners, who will each receive a Shark Trust trophy, as well as our runners up, and all highly commended images, which can be viewed in the slideshow below. We will be in touch directly with all our winners shortly.

For the past 15 years the Trust has raised public awareness about the issues facing sharks and challenged the common Jaws stereotype. The images entered into Sharks in Focus competitions, as well as those kindly donated by our supporters, have allowed us to engage the public and challenge people’s perceptions by showcasing and celebrating shark diversity, as well as highlighting their vulnerability.

We’re delighted to have been able to launch Sharks in Focus, in partnership with Diver Magazine, again in 2013 and would like to thank everyone who has taken part.

Thank you also to our sponsors; Plymouth National Marine Aquarium and Charles Hood Photography, for making the competition possible, as well as our panel of judges who have had the difficult task of selecting this year’s winners. We are extremely grateful to Alex Mustard, Michael Aw and Andy Murch for providing their expertise, as renowned underwater photographers, and for taking time from their hectic schedules to judge the competition.

All of the images below were also added to our Facebook page to give supporters the opportunity to vote for their favourite image. Congratulations go to David Litchfield for his image of a White Shark, captioned 'Confronting fears', which received a grand total of 404 likes!
