Northwest & Western Central Atlantic:

Distribution: Narrow distribution in the Northwest Atlantic, from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina up to Grand Banks, Canada (rarely seen north of the Scotian Shelf).

The capsule is approximately 3cm wide and 5cm long, while the whole eggcase (including horns) is approximately 12cm in total length.

One of the most common eggcases found on the Eastern seaboard.

Winter Skate (Leucoraja ocellata)

Distribution: Found in the Northwest Atlantic from North Carolina up to Labrador, Canada.

This eggcase has very long upper and lower horns (which can often be broken in specimens found on the beach). The capsule length is approximately 6cm, but including fully extended horns, it can be as long as 25cm.

Clearnose Skate (Raja eglanteria)

Distribution: Northwest & Western Central Atlantic, occuring from Massachusetts down to southern Florida, and in the eastern and northern Gulf of Mexico.

This eggcase has very short upper and lower horns which make it seem much squarer in shape. The capsule is approximately 5cm long and approximately 3.5cm wide, including horns this eggcase is around 7cm total length.

Chain Catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer)

Distribution: Patchy and irregular distribution. Found from George’s Bank all the way down to Florida and Texas; the northern Gulf of Mexico to Nicaragua; Barbados. Compagno noticed relatively high concentrations of young near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Eggcase is approximately 6cm in length and 2.5cm wide. Curled tendrils extend from each corner of the eggcase and patternation can be seen on the capsule surface.

Roundel Skate (Raja texana)

Distribution: Western Central Atlantic - the distribution of the Roundel Skate extends off the southeast coast of Florida, around the Gulf of Mexico and to the Yucatan Bank, Mexico.

Northeast & Eastern Central Pacific:

Big Skate Eggcase. Big Skate (Raja binoculata)

Distribution: Across the eastern Pacific coast from the Gulf of California up to the Bering Sea and Alaska. United States (Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington); Canada (British Columbia, Yukon); Mexico (Baja California). 

Very large eggcase – approximately 30cm total length (including horns). One of only two species where the eggcase contains multiple embryos (1-7).

Distribution: Across the eastern Pacific coast from the Gulf of California up to the Bering Sea and Alaska. United States (Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington); Canada (British Columbia, Yukon); Mexico (Baja California).

Distribution: Pacific continental shelf off Mexico and the USA, from southern California to Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Spiral eggcase approximately 9cm in length. Once laid, female horn sharks will often use their mouths to pick up the eggcase and deposit it in a crevice to keep it safe as the embryo develops.

Distribution: Eastern Pacific, found from California to southern Mexico (including Gulf of California) and also off central Chile.

Large eggcase (approximately 9-13cm in length and 3-6cm in width), similar in appearance to the Nursehound (Scyliorhinus stellaris) eggcase found in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean.
