Sharks have lived in our oceans for over 400 million years. Well before even the dinosaurs roamed the earth!
They're perfectly adapted to their environment. And can be found in every sea & ocean on earth. Some can even survive in freshwater!
You've probably heard of the White Shark. He’s rather famous. But, did you know that sharks come in many shapes, sizes and colours? And we're discovering new species all the time!
Some sharks are so tiny they can fit in the palm of your hand. While others are bigger than a double decker bus! Some glow in the dark or use their fins to walk. Others dazzle us with their bright colours and stunning patterns. While some are just plain weird. Like the Goblin Shark, who has transparent skin and jaws that shoot out to catch prey! Awesome. If not a little creepy.
And that's just for starters. There are so many incredible species to mention. We could go on and on forever...
Let's also not forget the skates, rays and chimaera. Closely related to sharks, they need our help just as much. So, when we refer to 'sharks' we generally include these wonderful animals too.
Worldwide there are over 500 species of shark, 600 skates and rays and 50 chimaera. All unique and amazing in their own ways! Great or small, charming or strange - we love them all. And work tirelessly to protect them.
