Sharks have lived in the world’s oceans for over 400 million years but within only a few decades humans have put many species at risk and driven others to extinction. It is estimated that up to 73 million sharks are killed every year (that’s 3 sharks every second) for their fins, which are used to make Shark Fin Soup.

Sharks don’t reproduce quickly and so their numbers are declining drastically, due to overfishing and other impacts of man. As top predators sharks maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem and play a critical role in our oceans by removing ill or injured fish and keeping prey numbers in check. The Shark Trust works to advance the worldwide conservation of sharks through science, education, influence and action and our members play a vital role.
