The winter issue of our Member's Magazine is out now and this time we’re tackling one of the biggest questions in shark conservation…

After such a great response to our last issue, Shark Focus #63 has once again been put together with the generous help of our friends at Crossfire. It’s looking just as sensational as the last and is packed full of stunning shark photography.

The magazine will be making its way to members in the next couple of weeks. Just in time for those chilly winter days to really set in. So, get ready to snuggle up with a cuppa and immerse yourself in the world of sharks.

Our main theme for this issue explores a big question with an answer that may not be as straightforward as it first seems.

Why do sharks matter?

While we think being so awesome is a good enough reason alone, the wider role sharks play in marine ecosystems makes for an interesting topic. So, we dive into the science, exploring the findings of key research in this area. Check out p.8-13 to find out more. You may find the answer surprising.

Here’s a sneak peek of some of our other articles this issue:

  • ‘How Does a Zebra Shark Change its Stripes’ - Tom “The Blowfish” Hird gives us the low down on the recent reclassification of the confusingly named Zebra Shark.

  • Aquariums at the Cutting Edge – we look at the potential of virtual reality as an alternative way of connecting people with sharks.

  • Fancy a career in shark conservation? Check out the second in our series of career articles, where we ask shark experts from around the world for their top tips and career advice. This one is perfect for any budding shark photographers. We interview Nick and Caroline Robertson-Brown from Frogfish Photography, who make their living travelling the world photographing sharks. Their work is incredible and well worth checking out!

This issue we unmask sharks undercover. How does a shark use its beard to hide? What tricks and illusions can baby sharks use to avoid being eaten? And how can a small unassuming shark intimidate much larger animals?

All will be revealed…
