Our Mediterranean programme involves policy and fisheries work, as with the Oceanics, but also targeted engagement with key stakeholders – fishers and enforcement officers – in key Mediterranean states. Our current focus is on Angel Sharks and Guitarfish – both bottom-dwelling flat species which get caught in mixed fisheries. These are two of the most threatened groups of sharks and rays which face particular pressure in the Mediterranean Sea.

“Funds for this programme support our Spain-based team member, our in-house multi-lingual project coordinator and government relations staff. We also produce a range of advisory materials and videos to assist fishers in identifying and handling these species.

Part of this programme has been to create Safe Release Guides in multiple languages. As a species which live on the seabed, angel sharks are vulnerable to being caught as bycatch. When caught accidentally by fishers, we can maximise post-release survival by following a set of safe release steps. This animation takes you through essential steps to safely handle and release angel sharks if caught accidentally, ensuring we give them the best chance of survival.
